2026 Devotions Week 20 Psalm 75

THE SOVEREIGN GOD
Psalm 75

“I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge with equity. When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm. To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns. Do not lift your horns against heaven; do not speak so defiantly.’”

These words in 2026 carry an especial sense of gravitas.

Trump has demonstrated to the world that he can say anything and (essentially) do anything with impunity and much of what he has said is twisted to his own view of reality and much of what he has done has brought pain and suffering to millions around the world.

At the same time, the past few weeks have brought news of death, suffering and disease among my circle of friends and acquaintances. Cancer seems to have brought pain and suffering, dare I say, to millions around the world, but also to people I know, and people who know God.

Perhaps there may be some who read these words with cynicism, asking God for evidence to back up what he claims.

For me it is another invitation to turn to him in utter helplessness. Who else can we turn to for mercy and compassion, for justice, for someone to help the poor, the helpless and the disenfranchised? Thankfully, God has not abandoned us.

The Psalmist calls me to praise and worship; at this point I can only kneel in prayer.

As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”
